Before his imprisonment, Alex had gotten close with Ellie, and now that he was free after five long years, it was easy to think he would be eager to find a female companion.
Nancy said, “Alex, I understand the urgency, but if you’re looking for someone, make sure she’s trustworthy. Even if we’re not as wealthy as before, we still have a good standing in the Jaslands elite.
“You must not get involved with married women, and you especially can’t mess with a widow, do you understand?”
As Alex endured Nancy’s relentless lecture, his expression turned increasingly sullen. “Mom, with my looks, even if I weren’t the heir to the Warren family, women still throw themselves at me as soon as I walk out the door.”
He continued casually, “Even in my most desperate state, I wouldn’t think about bringing home a widow. I was just joking that day, and you took it seriously.”
Nancy let out a sigh of relief, feeling a weight lift at her son’s
casce.
“Don’t worry, Mom. I’m nobody’s backup plan. I have no interest in becoming a stepdad,” Alex added.
“That’s good to hear. I’ll make sure some young ladies get introduced to you; you should go on a few blind dates,” Nancy suggested, a hint of excitement in her voice.
“Honestly, with my looks, who needs blind dates? Once I handle some issues at the company, I’ll find someone on my own,” Alex replied dismissively, ushering Nancy toward the door.
He said, “Mom, I really have things to take care of and I need to rest early. You should head home and take a breather.”
“And you should leave too,” Alex added, pushing Barry out the door along with his Mom.
“I’m still not reassured,” Nancy declared firmly, standing at the entrance, casting wary glances between the closed door and an obviously nervous Barry.
She could no longer let her son tread down this path; she swore to keep a close watch on him. She was determined to find out exactly what her son had been doing. Nancy thought, ‘Not another Ellie; I won’t allow it.‘
Just as Ellie was about to leave, she suddenly sneezed. Rubbing her nose, she grabbed a shawl and stuffed it into her bag.
“Ellie, running back and forth to the hospital isn’t a solution. Do you want me to help you clean up your new place that Whitney suggested you move into? You should stay there for a while,” Joanna said as she approached with concern.
“No need for that, Mom. The place has been renovated. I’ll head over tomorrow and tidy it up enough to live in,” Ellie assured her, offering a reassuring smile.
“You’re busy with work now, plus the new place is closer to the hospital, so your commute will be easier. It’ll also be more convenient once school starts for the kids,” Joanna pointed out, accompanying Ellie to the door.
“Got it, Mom. I’ll move as soon as I can,” Ellie promised before driving off to the hospital.
Orion had just checked into the hospital and was feeling emotionally unstable. To ensure safety, Ellie and Mark had arranged to alternate shifts.
Originally, Mark was supposed to be on duty that night, but he called to say he had something unexpected come up and asked Ellie to cover for him instead.
After checking on patients and finding everything normal, Ellie went to the duty room to get some rest.
The night passed without incident, and in the morning, as she prepared to hand over her shift to Mark and tidy up her new

“If Lacey comes asking, just say you haven’t seen me. You keep working; I need to drop by the ward first.” Mark rushed in like a whirlwind, disappearing into the elevator before Ellie had a chance to respond.
Ellie stood there, taken aback, just as Lacey hurried over. “Ellie, have you seen Mark?”
“I saw him heading toward the ward just now.” Before Ellie could think of how to respond, Quinlee pointed in the direction Mark had just gone.
“Ellie, I can’t talk to you right now; I’ll be in big trouble if I can’t find Mark.” Lacey dashed after the elevator.
