Lacey, feeling hopeless, placed her fork on the table and gently knocked her fist against her head, saying, “I only wanted the jewels. I asked Layton to bid for them, but he refused. So, I turned to Mark.
“I couldn’t bring myself to spend my own money on those jewels, so I dared Mark. He said his family was pressuring him to get married, and if I lost, I would marry him.
“If he lost, he would help me bid that set of jewelry. Since he’d never beaten me before, I agreed. But who would have thought, Mark actually won all three rounds.”
“He took my ID and my passport. He told me to wait for him at the city hall tomorrow morning at ten.”
Diana buried her face in her hands, while Ellie just stared in disbelief. Lacey’s eyes filled with tears as she continued, “He even said in front of so many people that I have the strongest sense of contract spirit.
“Now my family knows about this and insists I’ve made my own mess and need to deal with it.”
As Lacey talked on, her voice faded until she rested her head on the table. “I had planned to surf with my idol next week; what am I going to do now?”
Ellie and Diana exchanged glances. “I got drunk yesterday,” Diana said, feeling like she had missed the news.
Ellie usually stayed away from the news. However, they were all well aware of Lacey’s strong feelings.
“Diana, is it true that Mark is being pressured by his family to marry?” Lacey asked. Diana nodded, confirming it.
“I feel trapped; if I enter into a contract marriage with Mark, and then break up after a year, do you think he’ll agree?” Lacey pressed, and Diana nodded again in agreement.
“During that year, if I date my idol, will Mark kill me?” Lacey’s voice shook with worry.
“Don’t worry; Mark is really a gentleman; he’s just using you as a shield against family pressure. Honestly, all Mark cares about is his career, not relationships.” Diana assured.
Lacey still felt unsure and asked, “Really?”
“I promise,” Diana replied with sincerity.
Lacey looked at Ellie with a pleading gaze. “Ellie, do you think Mark would agree to a marriage contract?”
