Faced with Alex’s questioning gaze, Ellie’s heart started to race. Just moments ago, Quinlee had mentioned Orion’s name.
“What brings you here?” Ellie asked, looking away as she tried to stay calm.
“Who is this Orion that woman just spoke of?” Alex pressed, his voice dropping with seriousness.
“I didn’t hear anything,” Ellic replied. Her head drooped in guilt as she walked on, scrolling through her phone contacts.
“Don’t try to play tricks on me.” Alex stepped in front of her.
“I truly don’t know. If you heard something, you should ask her yourself,” Ellie said, trying to push past him, her eyes revealing her unease. Lying was not her strong suit, especially under the intensity of Alex’s stare.
“Fine, I will ask her,” Alex said, observing her discomfort. He gestured toward a black Maybach parked nearby. “My car is over there.”
“Sorry, I’m busy.” Ellie avoided his eyes and headed straight for her own car.
“I have some great news but no one to celebrate with.” Alex’s lonely tone made Ellie stop in her tracks.

She stood there for a moment, the silence hanging between them before she finally replied, “The happiest moments should be shared with family.”
“I’m looking for you,” Alex said as Ellie was about to walk away.
Before she could refuse again, Alex took a step closer. Clad in a sharp black business suit, he looked at her earnestly. “Just a few minutes will be enough.”
Ellie lowered her gaze and turned towards Alex’s car, not wanting her colleagues to see their conversation and jump to conclusions. Alex opened the passenger door, and she climbed in, accepting a can of beer he offered.
As she took the can of beer from Alex’s hand, she also grabbed the other can he held. “You can’t drink and drive, you know,” she warned.
“Don’t worry, I came prepared,” Alex said, pulling out two more juices and offering her a choice. Ellie picked one casually. Just as Alex started to open the cap for her, she twisted it off herself.
Alex opened his own can. “Just a step away, and no one can push me out of my position.”
Ellie listened quietly as Alex talked about his company’s exciting developments, feeling genuinely happy for him. If Alex kept his spirits up, it wouldn’t be long before he brought the Warren family back to its former glory.
“Congratulations,” she said, lightly clinking her juice with his.
“Let me ask you something,” Alex fidgeted with his drink, his gaze firmly fixed on Ellie. After a long pause, he asked, “Is there a man in your life?”
Ellie met Alex’s direct gaze and felt momentarily stuck for words. Once she regained her composure, she replied, “Of course there is.”
Recently, she had come to realize that her relationship with Alex had grown quite close. For whatever reason, she knew she had to keep her distance going forward.
“Is he local? Can I meet him?” Alex continued, clearly pushing for answers.
Ellie’s expression hardened. “We’re not that close.”

Alex’s voice dropped to a more serious tone. “Are you serious with him, or is it just a game?”
“I’m looking for a stepfather for my children–of course it’s serious.” Ellie shot him a glare before pushing the door open to exit. As adults, Alex’s intentions were clear to her.
