If she hadn’t stolen Ellie’s necklace on a whim back then and greedily claimed it belonged to her, leading Alex to mistake her for someone else, maybe none of the terrible things that followed would have happened.
It all started with a lie and a moment of greed, and her life was ruined.
She regretted it. If only time could go backward, she would be loyal to the Owens family, and she would love those who truly cared for her. However, it was too late.
Tears of regret slowly streamed down Haley’s face as she gave up the struggle, closing her eyes slowly.
“In the name of love, you’ve done unforgivable things. You asked for this.” The car began to move, and Ellie took one last look at Haley through the car window.
Everything in this world came with consequences. The reason Ellie chose to be a good man wasn’t out of cowardice, but because she understood that she reaped what she sowed.
No matter how hard life was, she still believed that good people would be blessed and bad ones would get what was coming to them.
Ellie and Alex were silent as they made their way back to the hospital. When the car finally came to a stop, as Ellie was getting out, Alex grabbed her arm. “If you’re scared, you can rest on my shoulder,” he said, patting his chest.
“I’m not scared,” Ellie glanced at Alex before getting out of the car.
After Ellie left, Alex turned to the front passenger seat where Barry was sitting and asked, “Who is Haley?”
“I’m sorry, Mr. Warren. I… I don’t know.” Barry quickly shook his head, clearly terrified. She knew if he said something wrong, Nancy would be the first to cut his tongue.
Alex raised an eyebrow. “Did I know Dr. Thompson before?”
“Well, it’s your personal matter. I don’t know!” Barry stammered. Just now, he had heard Alex ask Ellie, and Ellie had dismissed him with just a few words. He thought Alex hadn’t taken it seriously at all.
Alex frowned, opened the car door, and stepped out.
Around 7 p.m., Diana woke up in the ward.
“Ellie was right. Quinlee turned out to be Haley in disguise!” Diana groaned weakly as she pounded the bed in frustration.
“Be careful. You have an IV in your hand,” Aaron gently held Diana’s arm, preventing her from moving it too much.
“How did you figure out Quinlee’s true identity?” Lacey, exhausted, sat in a chair, her upper body leaning on Mark, her eyes half–closed.
“Because the second daughter of the Janssen family, who was once engaged to me, had a child.” Linda pushed Orion into the ward in a wheelchair, and the latter explained everything to the group.
Orion continued, “Back then, her boyfriend was a rising movie star, so she kept their relationship private. We only got engaged to appease our families.
“Later, Quinlee drowned, and her boyfriend, prioritizing his career, sent the child to his relatives in the countryside. He never made it public. If you want to know who she is, just do a DNA test, and everything will be clear.”
“Wait, so the one who drowned back then was the real Haley? And she had a famous boyfriend and a child before she died!” Lacey stared in disbelief at Mark, who calmly tapped her on the head with his fingers, saying nothing.

Aaron got a call from Jason, preparing to leave. “The police have caught those people. I need to head to the police station.
“I’ll identify the body and see if the person who harmed you that night is among them. I’ll come back to you soon,” Aaron whispered in Diana’s car before leaving the room.
Linda pushed Orion out of Diana’s ward. Ellie and Alex followed behind. Ellie headed to her office, while Alex wheeled Orion back to the room.
As they entered, Alex said, “I think we should let Mom and Dad visit you.”
“Not yet.” Orion replied without hesitation, “I’ll have my final facial reconstruction surgery next month. Let me recover from the scars first. I don’t want Mom and Dad worrying about me anymore.”
Alex didn’t press the matter further. After discussing work for a while, he left the room, taking a winding path until he reached Ellie’s office. He knocked on the door, and hearing a response, he adjusted his clothes before pushing the door
open.
Ellie saw Alex standing in the doorway with hands in his suit pants pockets, leaning casually against the door frame like a peacock. She quickly averted her gaze, slightly irritated. “Mr. Warren, do you need anything?”
Alex smirked. “I’m a big guy, but I’m a bit of a scaredy–cat. After seeing such a bloody scene, I’m worried I’ll have nightmares or struggle to sleep tonight. Dr. Thompson, do you have..”
Ellie cut him off before he could finish. “Take some sleeping pills. One won’t be enough, but two should do the trick.”
Alex was speechless.
