In the end, Alex took the box of sleeping pills that Ellie had given him and went back to the Warren Manor.
As he entered the living room, he saw the news playing on TV, reporting that the second daughter of the Janssen family, the richest in Jinerity, had been severely bitten by hounds.
“What a terrible scene! Aren’t you afraid your blood pressure will spike and you won’t be able to sleep at night?” Alex picked up the remote control and turned off the TV.
“She deserved it!” Nancy was not afraid at all. “Haley did so many b
things. This is the fate she deserves!”
Alex stood in the center of the living room, listening to Nancy who was cursing Haley. He walked over and asked, “Mom, Haley said that she and another woman both competed for me before. When did this happen? I don’t remember any of it.”
Hearing Alex’s sudden question, Nancy immediately shut her mouth. She exchanged a glance with Todd, then stood up on the couch and slapped Alex in the face. “Given your lousy attitude, do you think that’s even possible?”
Barry, seeing Alex getting slapped, quietly waited outside the living room.
“Stop daydreaming!” Nancy raised her voice nervously. “If any woman ever fell for you, I’d crawl on my knees to beg her to join our family!”
Nancy continued, “What would anyone want with you? You’re just a man with a criminal record and a bad temper. Honestly, I was about to sign you up on a dating app. What makes you feel so good about yourself?”
She slapped her thigh dramatically, then plopped back down onto the couch.
Alex rubbed his face, feeling aggrieved. “That makes sense,” he muttered and noticed Evan, the butler, bringing him a cup of tea. He stepped forward to take it. “Thanks. It’s late and you should rest.”
Evan said with a quiet smile, “Maybe I’m getting old. I have less sleep these days.”
Alex handed Evan the box of sleeping pills that Ellie had given him. “Take this. No side effects. If you can’t sleep, just take one. It’ll knock you out for sure.”
“Why are you carrying sleeping pills with you, Mr. Warren?” Evan asked, taking the medicine, though he was clearly concerned.
Alex’s parents looked alarmed. “Are you losing your mind?!” Todd’s face darkened in anger.
Nancy quickly spoke up, trying to smooth things over. “Alex, don’t take me too seriously. I was just messing around. Take your time.”
Alex blinked, completely taken aback.
Meanwhile, in a patient ward in Bondie Private Hospital, Orion sat in a wheelchair, staring at the TV. Linda crouched next to him, resting on his leg.
Although he couldn’t see it, he could hear things clearly. On the TV, the news was playing about Quinlee colluding with an international drug cartel, and how she was attacked by hounds after an internal conflict with the drug dealers.
“That’s terrifying.” Linda felt a wave of nausea as she saw Quinlee’s severely injured body. Some parts of her injuries were even censored on screen. She quickly covered her eyes, trying to avoid the graphic images.
“Enough,” Orion murmured, reaching for the remote and turning off the TV.

autumn breeze was cool, and it felt nice on the skin.
Linda draped a light jacket over Orion’s shoulders. “If I had known she wasn’t your fance, I wouldn’t have put up with her. 1 would have beaten her!” Thinking back on how Quinter bullied her, Linda couldn’t help but feel regret.
“With your tiny figure, you wouldn’t stand a chance against her Orion said, eyes closed as he enjoyed the cool night breeze in Jaslands.
