It was just past 6:30 p.m., and outside the Earl Hotel, Chris stared in disbelief as Alex stepped out of the car. He was dressed in cropped pants, a floral shirt, a gold chain, and sunglasses while carrying a silver tabby cat in his arms.
Chris quickly stepped forward, eyes widening in shock. He thought, ‘Is this really Mr. Warren? The swagger and the flashy attitude–is it him?”
“Why did you bring your cat again?” Layton said, frowning as he caught sight of the absurdly confident and flashy figure. He had just finished washing the baby bottle and rushed over as soon as he got Whitney’s call.
“I’ve told you a million times, there’s a hotel rule—no pets allowed. Lock it in the car!” Layton shot a glare at the cat in Alex’s
arms.
Alex shrugged. “I’ve done this before. Just treat it like a human.”
Layton stared at him, speechless.
Seeing Alex confidently strut into the hotel with the cat, Layton quickly caught up and grabbed his arm. “Nalani is inside with her family. Don’t let her see the cat, or she’ll have its fur all pulled out!”
“If she does that, I’ll shave your kid’s head bald.” Alex, still holding the cat, walked away confidently, with Layton trying–and failing–to stop him.
Behind them, Chris and Barry exchanged a glance before quickly following along.
Layton waved his hand, and the lobby manager quickly jogged over. “What can I do for you, Mr. Mosley?”
“Have two people keep an eye on Mr. Warren’s cat!” Layton ordered, before hurrying to the private room to find Nalani.
“Sorry, guys,” Layton greeted as he entered, taking a seat obediently next to Nalani.
He casually observed Nalani’s reaction, then turned to Ellie. “There’s a peacock outside. Do you want to go check it out?”
Ellie, noticing the mischievous look on Layton’s face, quickly figured out who he meant by the peacock.
“Wow, I’m going!” Oscar dropped his fork and dashed out of the room.
“I’m going too!” Betty, along with Whitney’s son, George, and Layton’s son, Jared, all followed in a rush.
Ellie stood up, about to follow, but Layton stopped her. “It’s fine. There are staff members outside keeping an eye on things. Let’s just eat. They’ll come back soon if they can’t find the peacock.”
Not long after, Jared and George came back. Whitney asked, “Where are Oscar and Betty?”
George and Jared answered in unison, “They went to chase a cat!”
“A cat?!” Everyone looked confused.
Layton stood up with a look of impending doom on his face, ready to leave.
“Layton!” Nalani twisted Layton’s ear. “Is it Alex’s cat?”
Layton made a pleading expression, looking at Nalani. “The door is open… Honey, please don’t do this in public.”
Seeing that the door to the private room was wide open, Nalani quickly let go of Layton’s ear and adjusted his tie.
“Don’t be mad. Go ahead and enjoy the meal. I’ll go get the kids and deal with that damn cat!” Layton tried to calm Nalani

down, but just as he sat back down, Betty burst into the room.
She pointed at George and Jared. “You two, come with me!”
The two boys jumped up and ran after Betty. Seeing this, Ellie quickly stood up, ready to chase after them.
“Nothing to worry about. Let me go check,” Layton stopped Ellie again.
“They’re definitely fighting!” Ellie pushed Layton aside and rushed out of the room to catch up with Betty.
About ten minutes later, in a corridor of the Earl Hotel’s private club, Ellie found the group of kids surrounded by a few adults. One chubby boy was sitting on the ground, crying, while the rest of them gathered around, watching.

Ellie pushed through the crowd and saw the boy’s face bruised. With a calm expression, she moved quietly to stand in front of the kids.
