Ellie got off work and tried to push away all the bad thoughts swirling in her head. After a quick shower and a small bite to eat, she snuggled into bed to catch up on her reading.
Around nine in the evening, her phone rang. It was Alex. Remembering how he got hurt in the hospital while saving her, Ellie hesitated but answered the call.
“Where have you been?” Alex sounded really upset.
Ellie hesitated for a moment and replied honestly, “I just got home from work.”
“I got stabbed while trying to save you, and you’re just at home? You scatterbrained idiot! Get back here now!”
Ellie held the phone tightly, feeling the anger pouring through the screen.
“I can’t. I’m already in bed,” she said quickly before hanging up. Haley had misunderstood her today, and she didn’t want to stir up more trouble for herself.
Because of Alex’s call, Ellie lost her focus and couldn’t continue reading. Eventually, she dozed off, feeling all fuzzy when she suddenly sensed someone standing by her bedside.
Startled, she shot up, letting out a scream!
“Click.” Alex turned on the light.
When she looked again, she’d practically rolled into the far corner of her bed.
Still shaken, Ellie patted her chest, trying to calm herself down. Slowly, color returned to her face. The last time Alex came over, she’d naively let him in, and he’d seen her password.
She hadn’t changed it yet, and now he remembered it and barged in–at midnight, no less
“Get me something to eat!” Alex glared at Ellie, raising his injured arm.
Ellie hid under the covers, “Alex, you’re with Haley now. Can’t you just stay away from my place?”
Alex countered, “Being with Haley has nothing to do with you! Hurry up and come over!”
A few minutes later, Ellie was reluctantly dragged into the kitchen to whip something up for him.
In the dead of night, Ellie busied herself cooking while Alex leaned against the kitchen door, complaining, “Is spaghetti all you’re giving me?”
Ellie put down the spaghetti and pulled an egg out of the refrigerator.
“I’m injured, and this is what you’re giving me?” he shot back.
Ellie looked at the spaghetti and egg, then grabbed a tomato from the fridge.
Seeing him ready to blow up, she quickly reached for some greens too. This is all I have,” she said.
Alex just stood there, speechless.

When Alex fell silent, Ellie continued boiling the noodles.
“Ellie, did you skip brain day? Are you missing some wires up the?” he suddenly asked.
Rolling her eyes at his criticism, she glanced back at him. Sure, maybe she was a bit clueless sometimes, but he was the one who had a girlfriend and was here at this hour.
“I got hurt for you and ended up in the hospital, and you’re just home sleeping like a baby. Are you really that clueless?” he
continued.
“Haley is right there with you, if you needed anything, you could just ask her,” Ellie shot back as she got back to cooking.
Alex replied, “Girlfriends are meant to be cared for; you can’t just throw orders at them.”
