Yesterday, Ellie got a call from Lacey, who said she was back and invited her to a welcome–back party tonight. She initially wanted to decline, but since Lacey showed up at the hospital, shhad no choice but to agree.
Lacey mentioned she had also invited a few other close friends, and Ellie didn’t want to embarrass her. So, reluctantly, Ellie went to the bar to borrow a decent outfit from the boss, Whitney

mprise, Whitney gave her a brand–new dress, saying was too small to return. Even when Ellie tried to offer her
Whitney refused, saying it wasn’t worth much.
To go with the off–the–shoulder, waist–cinched, knee–length dress she was wearing, she made the tough decision to buy a nice pair of high heels. Before leaving the house, she even took the time to do her makeup.

for her father’s medicine, she would save every penny, almost skipping meals. She worked tirelessly, like a spinning top that never stopped.
After interning at the hospital and working part–time at the bar for a while, she realized there were so many people who judged based on appearances.
Most people respect the clothes before respecting the person. Dressing neatly could at least save her from some unfair treatment and losses.
Summoning her courage, Ellie stood at the entrance of the private room and immediately spotted Alex. He was sitting right in the center, leaning over to whisper something to Haley that made her blush and move even closer to him.
Ellie’s heart tightened, and she quickly turned to leave. She thought, “What are they doing here too?”
She became good friends with Lacey during college in Jinerity. She always knew Lacey came from a well–off family but never guessed she knew Alex as well.
“Ellie, you finally made it!” Just as Ellie was about to turn around, Lacey grabbed her and pulled her into the room, “Everyone’s here except for you,” she said.
With Lacey’s words, the gaze of about ten people in the room turned sharply towards the doorway. Ellie was so nervous she didn’t even dare to look up, feeling as if a sharp gaze was trying to pierce her.
Haley’s eyes showed a moment of surprise when she saw Ellie, but the jealousy in her eyes was hardly hidden. She thought, “So Ellie and Lacey are friends.
Carefully linking arms with Alex, Haley’s gaze was locked on Ellie and couldn’t look away.
Usually, she didn’t dress up, wearing clothes that weren’t very presentable. But she was so dressed up today, with makeup and high heels.
If she wasn’t mistaken, the dress Ellie was wearing was a high–end piece from a famous luxury brand’s current collection. Haley thought, ‘How does she afford it when she can barely afford food?”
Layton glanced at Alex with a playful look. ‘So the good friend Lacey mentioned is Ellie, huh? I was wondering who could be prettier than your girlfriend.”
Alex slowly squinted his eyes, staring intently at Ellie. She wore a white off–the–shoulder dress that showed her neck, shoulders, and ankles, fitting her form snugly. Her waist seemed so slim that he could probably wrap his hand around it.

Her long hair naturally cascaded down her back, neatly tucked hind her ears. She stood there demurely, radiating an innocent sweetness. Her flawless makeup enhanced her unique features, and her petal–like lips, painted a soft nude pink, moved in a captivating way.
Alex took a deep breath and another one. He tugged at his collar using tongs to drop ice cubes into the glass in front of him until the wine inside nearly spilled over. He then picked it up and drank it all in one go.
