Amidst the excited cheers from everyone around them, Alex gently held Haley’s chin, his warm lips slowly moving closer.
Ellie numbly watched as Alex’s lips got closer and closer to Haleys, her head buzzing so loudly that she couldn’t hear anything around her.
Her heart was pounding so hard it felt like it might leap out of her chest any second. Even so, Ellie made herself keep watching. She needed to do this to finally get over Alex.
“They want to see, so we won’t let them!” Alex chuckled softly, then released Haley.
The next moment, disappointed murmurs filled the room. Haley slowly opened her eyes, looking at Alex with obvious. disappointment. As everyone teased, Haley forced a smile, but it looked very unnatural.
Back when she was dating Aaron, whenever she showed a little boldness, Aaron would lose control and kiss her passionately. She often felt an irresistible urge to get more intimate with Aaron, and she would even get upset when he turned her down.
Alex’s personality was the exact opposite of Aaron’s. He was wild and flamboyant, and even though he knew she was Aaron’s girlfriend, be pursued her with intense passion.
He spoiled her with flowers and jewelry and took her to all the best places for food and fun. He made sure to win over her parents and friends.
In public, he held her hand and hugged her, even going so far as to tattoo her name on his ring finger.
She originally thought that after breaking up with Aaron, Alex would be eager to be with her, but he never was. Even when she hinted at it, he showed no interest at all.
Alex was in his late twenties, full of youthful energy. It seemed impossible for him not to have desires. The always confident woman now found herself deeply doubting her own appeal.
Haley kept her thoughts to herself and glanced at Alex. Although Alex was casually adding ice cubes to his drink, she could still tell that his gaze was lingering in Ellie’s direction.
“I’ll go to the restroom. Ellie, do you want to come along?” Haley stood up and went over to Ellie.
Ellie, who was anxious about finding an excuse to leave, was relieved by Haley’s offer. She quickly stood up and left the room with Haley.
Around the corner of the hallway, Haley stopped Ellie and said. “Ellie, I know you have some misunderstandings about me, but I’m with Alex now and I’ll soon be your sister–in–law. I’ll be honest with you, even if it’s not what you want to hear.”
After a brief pause, Haley continued, “Even though you and Lacey are friends, Lacey is the heiress of the Mosley family. I don’t need to remind you of your position.”
With just an arm’s length between them, Ellie looked at Haley and said, “Just speak your mind, no need to beat around the bush with me.”
Haley, proudly showing off her freshly done nails, said, “Do you know why all those rich guys got so excited when you walked into the room tonight?”
Seeing Ellie frown, Haley laughed and continued, “All those men in the room tonight are in the same circle as Alex. Playing with girls like you
is as easy as having a meal for them.”

She went on, “At most, they’ll throw some money and that’s it. Even if they really like you, you just be kept on the side. These men are all about reality. When it comes to marriage, the only choose someone from their own social class.”
Haley said, “It’s nothing personal if you spend time with Lacey in private, but at these fancy elite parties, you’d better not come again. None of them will be sincere with you. You’d just become their amusement, their toy!”
Ellie looked at Haley with a sarcastic smile and said, “Thanks for the warning. After saying that, Ellie skipped the restroom and went straight to the elevator.
Leaving the club, Ellie stood by the roadside, breathing in the fresh air and gradually relaxing her tense nerves. In the end, Haley just didn’t want her to meet Alex or join their so–called elite group
After all, Haley and her brother broke up in a pretty scandalous way, and everyone knew it without anyone saying a word. Even if Alex wasn’t around, as long as Lacey was beside her, no one dared to bother her–at least not tonight.
Ellie took out her phone to text Lacey, planning to call a cab back to her apartment. She was halfway through typing when suddenly two men staggered in front of her.
The strong smell of alcohol made Ellie step back instinctively. When she saw that one of the men was Trevor, who had been sent to the hospital by Alex after a bar fight, her heart skipped a beat. She turned and ran towards the club.
“You think you can just run?” Trevor yelled, catching up to Ellie and yanking her hair from behind. With the help of another man, they began pulling her towards a car parked by the roadside.
“Help! Ellie cried out, struggling despite the sharp pain from Trevor’s grip on her hair. Just as she saw two security guards. running over from the hotel’s entrance, Trevor slapped her so hard that everything went blurry and she lost consciousness.
