Alex allowed Ellie to push hims, still keeping her pinned in the passenger seat. “If you’re not guilty of anything, what are you scared of he teased.
Their eyes met, and Ellie was left speechless. Even after months of not seeing him, trying her hardest to let go and forget, being alone with him now still threw her off balance.
She had feelings for him, and that was why she felt so uneasy. Alex, on the other hand, was calm and composed, because he didn’t feel anything for her. No matter how ambiguous his actions were, they didn’t affect him at all.
With a click, Alex fastened Ellie’s seatbelt, rolled down the window, and honked twice. “Mom, what are you doing?” he shouted, and then the car began to move backward.
Nancy pointed at Alex, running over. “You little rascal, are you picking on Ellie again?”
Alex didn’t explain but turned his head to glance at Ellie. The next moment, he hit the gas, and the car rapidly reversed, performing a smooth drift toward the gate.
Ellie sat in the passenger seat, still unnerved. Her hands clasped tightly over her chest, and she could feel her ears burning with embarrassment.
The ride was silent. Ellie kept her head down the whole time. Alex seemed focused on driving, but he glanced at her occasionally through the rearview mirror. He opened his mouth to speak several times but ended up saying nothing
“Stop the car.” Just as the car reached the apartment entrance, Ellie suddenly spoke up. Before Alex could come to a complete stop, she had already stepped out. “Thank you for the ride, Alex. Be careful on your way back,” she said before quickly turning to leave.
Alex only looked away when Ellie was out of sight. Staring at the empty passenger seat, he turned off the engine, took out a cigarette, and lit it.
Not far away, a white Mercedes came to a slow stop. Haley spotted Alex inside, moodily smoking a cigarette. Anger bubbled up inside her as she gripped the steering wheel tightly, her eyes reddening with fury
