Chapter 12
The halls of the Silverclaw Pack’s infirmary were in complete chaos.
A team of healers and medical personnel rushed through the corridors, carrying both injured wolves into the emergency wing.
Alaric’s parents, having been informed of the situation, wasted no time in summoning the
best medical experts from allied packs to assist.
Doctors worked tirelessly in shifts, trading places as exhaustion set in. Bloodied bandages
were carried out in an endless stream, the scent of antiseptic thick in the air.
Even the Matriarch, still recovering from her own ordeal, insisted on being wheeled to the
surgical wing.
She knew–if she wasn’t there, Alaric would survive, but Mina’s fate would be uncertain.
Despite everything that had happened, not a single member of the Moonveil Pack–Mina’s
so–called family–showed up.
No messages
of concern.
No offers of support.
Nothing.
It wasn’t until the early hours of the third day that Alaric was finally wheeled out.
His vital signs were stable. Both arms, though severely damaged, had been saved. But even
with the best care, full function would likely never return.
Upon hearing the news, his mother collapsed on the spot.

The Matriarch, however, had only one question. “What about Mina?” Her voice was firm, but there was an unmistakable tremor of fear. “How is my little moon?”
The head healer exhaled deeply. “Her condition is… unstable. You should prepare for the possibility that she may never wake up.”
The Matriarch swayed in her wheelchair, her grip tightening on the armrests. She refused to accept it.
Two days later, Alaric finally woke.
The first thing he did was turn to the attending nurse, his voice hoarse but urgent. “Where’s
Mina?”
The nurse froze, her expression caught between hesitation and fear.
Everyone in the infirmary knew what had happened. They had seen it–the way their Alpha
had thrown himself forward without hesitation, breaking both arms just to soften Mina’s
fall.
And now, they were afraid. Afraid of what Alaric would do when he learned the truth.
The moment of silence stretched too long. Alaric’s heart clenched, a sinking feeling spreading through his chest.
He yanked at the IVs, the sharp sting of torn flesh barely registering as he shoved himself
off the bed.
The wound on his arm, barely stitched together, ripped open immediately, fresh blood soaking through the bandages and dripping onto the floor.
One step.
Two steps.
Three.

By the time the nurses ran after him, blood had already begun pooling at his feet, each drop marking his path as he stumbled down the hall.
He checked every room.
Every. Single. One.
But Mina was nowhere to be found.
His vision blurred, his head growing light from the blood loss, yet he refused to stop. Not
until he found her. By the time he reached the top floor of the intensive care unit, his legs nearly gave out.
And that was where he finally saw her.
Lying motionless on the hospital bed, surrounded by an array of tubes and machines, Mina
looked so small, so fragile–as if she would disappear if he so much as touched her.
The sharp gasp of a nurse behind him finally broke the silence. Alaric didn’t react. Didn’t
even blink.
His entire world had narrowed to the sight before him. “…When will she wake up?”
No one answered. Until Rachel stepped forward.
Her eyes were red–rimmed, her hands wringing together in grief, her voice barely above a whisper. “Alaric…”
She sniffled, as if barely holding back tears. “The healers said Mina’s injuries were…
extensive. Her brain suffered severe trauma.”
Alaric’s stomach dropped.
Rachel swallowed hard, then delivered the final blow. “They’re saying she may never wake
¡ up.”
The ground beneath him tilted. The world around him went silent. Only the sound of his
own heartbeat, erratic and painful, remained.

His knees buckled, and for the first time in years, Alaric felt truly, utterly powerless.
“Alaric, I know you’re hurting, but you need to take care of yourself,” a voice, laced with
concern, echoed in his ears.
He barely registered the words, his mind a maelstrom of guilt and confusion. How could this have happened? He had only intended to give Mina a small fright, a lesson to curb her reckless behavior. Never in his wildest imaginings did he foresee her leaping from the
third–floor balcony.
If she truly didn’t want to leave the pack and journey to the distant territory, why hadn’t she simply told him? Why resort to such an extreme measure? He wracked his brain, desperately seeking answers that remained elusive. The weight of her desperate act pressed down on him, heavy and suffocating.
His wolf, normally a source of strength and primal instinct, whimpered within him, mirroring his own turmoil. The scent of her blood, faint yet undeniable, clung to the air, a constant, agonizing reminder of her fall.
Alaric’s injuries worsened due to his recklessness, and the healers had no choice but to
sedate him for treatment.
By the time he was coherent again, his mother was there, waiting. But instead of concern, her expression was one of cold displeasure. “That girl nearly took your life, and you’re still
worried about her?”
Alaric barely spared her a glance, his voice emotionless. “She is my mate.”
His mother scoffed, crossing her arms.
“Your mate threw herself from a window like a reckless child and nearly dragged you to the
grave with her.”
Alaric’s fingers clenched into the sheets, but he said nothing.
“II had known she would cause you this much trouble, I never would have allowed her to

stay in this pack,” his mother continued, her anger mounting. “Look at you. Look at your hands. You nearly destroyed yourself for her.”
She inhaled sharply, then softened her tone, as if attempting to reason with him. “Alaric, it’s time to let go of this ridiculous bonding ceremony. You know as well as I do that she won’t be able to stand by your side anymore.”
Alaric remained silent for a long moment, his expression dark and unreadable.
“Mina is my mate–to–be,” he stated, his voice steady but laced with restrained anger. “Saving her was my duty, and I would do it again without hesitation.”
He lifted his gaze to his mother, unflinching. “If you’re only here to speak ill of her, then you should leave.”
His mother’s face twisted in disbelief, her frustration reaching a boiling point. “You—”
Before she could explode, Rachel swiftly stepped in, her voice soft and soothing, the perfect
mediator.
“Auntie, Alaric is still recovering,” she said gently, placing a hand on the older woman’s arm. “Please don’t be upset. He only said that because he’s exhausted.”
Then, turning to Alaric, she spoke with careful patience, her tone almost pleading.
“I know you care for Mina, but look at her condition shouldn’t we at least consider postponing the bond? Just until we know for sure.”
Alaric’s mother, sensing the shift, seized the opportunity.
“Rachel is right.” She folded her arms, nodding as if the decision had already been made. “I .
have always thought Rachel was the better match for you. She’s intelligent, graceful, and loyal–unlike that girl, who only ever brought trouble.”
Her voice hardened. She gave a pointed glance toward Rachel, then added smoothly,
“You should just make it official. Marry Rachel instead.”
