Chapter 15
The sharp crash of a chair against the floor echoed through the dimly lit office as Zane
stumbled backward, his face drained of all color.
“You said we’d wait until she was moved to another pack!” His voice shook as he scrambled
to his feet. “If we do it tonight and they trace it back to us-”
“We don’t have time to consider more.” Rachel’s tone was clipped, her arms folded tightly across her chest.
“If we let her leave, Alaric will be with her every second. There will be no chance to act.”
Zane’s fingers twitched at his sides. He had never been good under pressure.
Years ago, when their family had suffered a financial collapse, their father had thrown
himself off a cliff rather than face the crushing debt. Their mother, stricken with grief, had
wasted away in sickness.
And Zane? Zane had done what he always did–he ran. In the dead of night, he had stripped their home of everything valuable and disappeared, leaving Rachel and their dying
mother to face the wrath of the debt collectors.
If she hadn’t been resourceful, if she hadn’t used Alaric’s influence to carve out a place for
herself, she would have ended up in a fate far worse than ruin.
She had saved them both. And now she was expected to clean up his mess again. Her
patience thinned.
“Listen,” she hissed. “This is the only way. If we don’t do it now, if they transfer her, the lies we built will fall apart. And once she says, Alaric will know everything.”
Zane swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing. Rachel wasn’t wrong.
His position as the Crescent Ridge Pack’s chief medical officer was held up by Alaric’s favor
alone.

*If the truth surfaced–that he had forged medical records, concealed Mina’s true condition,
and played a hand in her poisoning–his career, his life, would be over.
Taking a shuddering breath, he nodded.
“The nurse in charge of her care,” he muttered. “She’s one of mine.”
“Then tell her to do it.” Rachel’s voice was deadly calm. “Just a single injection. Colorless.
Odorless. No trace left behind.”
“As long as Mina’s body remains in this hospital, we can control the narrative.”
That night, the plan was set in motion.
The intensive care unit was quiet, the steady beeping of machines the only sound filling the
dimly lit room.
The nurse’s hands trembled as she reached into her uniform pocket, her fingers brushing
against the cold glass of a vial.
The liquid inside shimmered faintly under the sterile lights. A potent neurotoxin. Just a
fraction of a dose would be enough.
For someone in Mina’s condition, she wouldn’t even have the chance to wake up.
Her throat tightened. Her fingers shook as she prepared the syringe.
Then-
It slipped from her grip, landing on the floor with a soft clink. Heart hammering, she
crouched down to retrieve it.
But before she could, a shadow loomed over her. A strong hand grabbed her by the back of
the collar.

room. The heavy door slammed shut behind her.
Ånd standing outside, his golden eyes burning with quiet rage, was Alaric.
The nurse barely had time to react before ice–cold water crashed over her, drenching her
from head to toe. A scream tore from her lips, the sudden chill shocking her system.
“Awake now?” Alaric’s voice was low, dangerously soft.
The air felt heavier, the tension suffocating. A nearby guard stepped forward, holding up
the syringe she had dropped.
“We tested the contents,” he reported. “It’s a high–grade neurotoxin. Causes paralysis,
respiratory failure, and cardiac arrest within seconds.”
“For someone in a coma, there would be no signs of struggle. The death would appear
natural.”
Alaric flexed his fingers at his sides, his jaw tight. He turned his gaze back to the shivering woman on the ground. “Who’s your boss?”
The nurse’s lips parted, but no sound came out.
A sharp cry rang out as one of Alaric’s men pressed his boot down onto her ankle, the
sickening crack of bone echoing in the hallway.
Alaric crouched in front of her, his voice sharper than the winter air. “I won’t ask again.”
Tears streaked down her face as she broke, sobbing uncontrollably.
“It was Rachel!” she choked out. “It was Rachel and Zane!”
