Chapter 17
So that was the truth.
Alaric’s breath came sharp and uneven, his mind reeling from the weight of it all.
No wonder Mina had cried that day. No wonder she had looked at him with such unbearable pain in her eyes.
At that moment, she must have realized everything she believed in had crumbled. The man
she had once thought she could trust, the one she had wanted to spend her life with, had
abandoned her without hesitation.
He had left her in the very same wilderness where her parents had been slaughtered.
She must have been terrified. She must have hated him.
His body trembled, his hands curling into fists so tight that his nails cut into his palms. If
not for the heavy casts binding his broken arms, Alaric might have slammed his head
against the nearest wall, just to feel even a fraction of the agony Mina had endured.
The seething regret inside him ignited into a raging fire, burning with only one goal.
“Bring me Rachel and Zane.”
Zane had been indulging himself when the guards stormed in.
A drunken haze clung to the air as he lounged on the bed, half–draped over a woman who
shrieked at the sudden intrusion.
He barely had time to react before he was yanked from the sheets.
His head smacked against the floor, and he barely managed to scramble up before he was dragged toward the waiting Alpha.

“You bastards! Do you even know who I am?” Zane spat, struggling. “I’m the chief medical officer! I’m Alaric’s future brother–in–law! Once my sister becomes his Luna, I swear I’ll-”
A guard’s fist slammed into his gut, cutting off the rest of his sentence.
–
Rachel, on the other hand, had been waiting.
She had stayed awake through the night, glancing at the clock every few minutes, waiting
for confirmation that the nurse had completed her task.
But no message came. Every time she tried to call, the line went unanswered. Something wasn’t right.
A deep sense of unease twisted in her stomach as the final minutes passed with no sign of
success.
Then-
Her bedroom door burst open. The guards were on her before she could react, binding her
hands behind her back.
Her breath caught in her throat. Something had gone terribly, terribly wrong.
But she forced herself to remain composed, lifting her eyes to meet Alaric’s the moment she
was dragged into the room. “Alaric, what’s wrong?”
Her voice was soft, trembling–vulnerable. She raised her bound wrists, eyes wide with
innocent confusion. “Why am I being treated like this?”
She had spent years perfecting this act. But it did not work this time.
Alaric did not soften. His golden eyes were cold, filled with nothing but loathing.
One of his guards stepped forward, tossing a small vial at her feet. A faint pink liquid
swirled inside.

Rachel’s stomach dropped. But before she could speak, Zane was dragged into the room.
į
He was barely standing, his face bruised and swollen, eyes wide with panic. And the moment he saw her, he broke.
“It was her!” he screeched, pointing a shaking finger at his sister.
“It was Rachel’s plan all along! I–I’m a doctor, why the hell would I do something like this?”
He scrambled forward, his body shaking in desperation.
“She’s the one who wanted Mina dead!” he shouted. “She’s the one who planned everything!
She used me! She forced me to-”
A guard’s boot slammed into his stomach, sending him crashing to the ground.
Rachel stood in stunned silence. She had always known Zane was a coward. But to think he
would betray her so quickly…
Still, she couldn’t afford to lose composure.
Alaric was watching her, waiting for her defense.
She had one chance to turn this around. She crawled forward, lowering her head to rest against his knee.
“Alaric… you’re listening to outsiders instead of me?” Her voice was quiet, laced with sadness. “Why would I want Mina dead? Why would I ever hurt her?”
She lifted her skirt, revealing the scarred wound on her leg.
“You saw this yourself.” Her voice trembled. “I nearly died that day. Mina–she pushed me.
You know she did.”
This was her trump card. The role of the victim. It had worked before. And it had always
worked before.

But Alaric only looked at her with pure disgust. “You weren’t pushed,” he said flatly. “It’s you who used Mina’s parents against her. You provoked her. And when she refused to Attack you, you threw yourself down the cliff and stabbed your own leg.”
Rachel’s mind reeled.
How?
How could he possibly know that?
