Chapter 18
Rachel barely had time to process her failure before she threw herself forward, gripping Alaric’s leg in desperation. “Alaric, you know you love me!”
Her voice cracked, tears streaming down her face as she clung to him with the last vestiges of hope.
“You were my first love! You said you would never leave me! Do you really not remember? I gave you the best years of my life!” she sobbed. “Mina is the outsider between us! Can’t we just go back to the way things were?”
Alaric’s fury exploded like a raging storm. Without hesitation, he drove his boot into
Rachel’s chest with enough force to send her crashing into the ground.
The impact sent blood spewing from her lips as she gasped for air, her body curling inward
in agony.
His voice was ice–cold, merciless. “You never change. Always twisting the truth, always painting yourself as the victim.”
Rachel coughed violently, her body convulsing from the force of the blow. But then–She
laughed.
Her laughter was laced with madness, hysteria, and something deeply, deeply twisted.
“Alaric, you’re such a hypocrite.”
Her voice came hoarse, raw from the pain, but mocking nonetheless. “Yes, I staged my fall
Yes, I framed Mina. Yes, I tried to kill her.”
She wiped the blood from her mouth with the back of her hand, a cruel smile twisting her
lips. “But don’t forget, Alaric–who was the one who abandoned her?”
His breath stilled.
“Who was the one who threw her to the rogues and left her to die? Who used the mating

ceremony as leverage to control her? Who ignored her pain over and over again, thinking
he was just trying to get attention?”
Rachel tilted her head, her bloodstained teeth bared in a wicked grin. “Who made her so hopeless that she would rather jump to her death than stay by your side?”
Alaric froze. Every word she spoke was true.
A sharp, stabbing pain pierced his chest, worse than any wound he had ever endured in battle. The weight of his sins crushed him, suffocated him.
Somewhere in the distance, he heard himself whisper: “I’m sorry, Mina… I’m so sorry.”
Darkness swallowed him whole.
The first one Mina saw when she opened her eyes was him.
A man whose name she didn’t quite remember–yet the moment she saw him, her lips
moved on instinct.
“Kieran.”
Kieran’s eyes widened, his breath catching as he immediately reached out, gently cradling
the back of her head.
“Mona-” His voice shook, thick with emotion, his entire body trembling as if he feared sho

She felt the cool rim of a cup press against her lips. The first sip of water sent a rush of
sensation back into her body, awakening buried memories.
She remembered her name back—Mina.
She remembered the promise—become Kieran’s mate.

A single tear slipped down her cheek, but she didn’t know if it was grief, relief, or something
else entirely.
“You’re awake.” Kieran brushed it away with his thumb. His jaw was tight, but his voice held an edge of something raw, something almost desperate. “Mona, I’m always waiting…”
