Chapter 22
The servant hesitated before finally speaking.
“It was Miss Rachel,” she said cautiously, lowering her head. “She ordered us to pack up all of Miss Mina’s belongings and send them away. She said that since Miss Mina was leaving for another pack and wouldn’t be coming back, we had to make sure that nothing was left
behind.”
Alaric’s breath hitched.
A memory resurfaced–the day he arranged for Mina to be sent away. He had overheard her soft voice over the phone, speaking to the pack’s logistics coordinator.
“I don’t want it anymore.”
At the time, he had questioned her about it. She had merely shaken her head, her
expression unreadable, before replying with calm indifference.
Now, standing in the empty chamber that once belonged to her, an unsettling dread coiled
deep in his gut.
Without hesitation, he sent his men to track down her belongings.
But the report came back with devastating finality–Mina herself had ordered everything
discarded.
Her clothes, her jewelry, every personal item–including her paintings.
Alaric felt his mind fracture under the weight of realization. She had erased herself. Tears
burned at the edges of his eyes, but he swallowed them back, his hands curling into fists.
In his desperation, he clung to one last thing—the ring.
The bonding ceremony ring that he had thrown away in a moment of blind fury. The ring they had chosen together.

The ring she had slipped onto his finger with trembling hands, her eyes alight with an emotion too raw to be concealed.
That was all that remained of her now.
He had the lake searched by an elite retrieval team.
But the task was impossible–searching for a ring in those murky depths was no different
than searching for a whisper in a storm.
So he ordered the unthinkable—Drain the entire lake.
The process was agonizingly slow. As the water receded, the muddy bottom was revealed–thick layers of silt and scattered debris, making the search excruciatingly
difficult.
His parents arrived, their presence unwelcome. His father’s disappointment was palpable
as he surveyed the scene, shaking his head.
“You’ve lost your mind,” he declared, his voice laced with frustration. “You’ve abandoned your duties, neglected the pack–all for a woman.”
His mother scoffed, her expression one of barely concealed contempt.
“She’s as good as dead, Alaric,” she snapped. “You keep her in that hospital bed like some cursed relic, and we’ve tolerated it. But this?” She gestured toward the drained lake, the gathered workers, the debris–strewn ground. “To waste time and resources searching for a ring? What will the alphas of other packs think of us?”
Alaric slowly lifted his head. His golden eyes, once burning with defiance, were hollow
For years, he had been shackled by duty, his every action dictated by expectations–his own, his parents‘, his pack’s.
It was because of those expectations that he had left Mina behind.
Because his parents never approved of her, he had tried to change her, to make her more
acceptable–to mold her into someone she was never meant to be.

Chapter 22
‘His voice, hoarse but unyielding, cut through the tense silence.
“I want Mina,” he said, his tone carrying the weight of his conviction. “I want her to wake up. If she never does…” He exhaled slowly, his expression unreadable. “Then I’ll follow her.”
His father’s face darkened. His mother gasped. But Alaric no longer cared.
For an entire week, he worked alongside the retrieval team, sifting through the dense, suffocating mud with his bare hands.
Sharp stones and shards of glass tore through his gloves, slicing into his skin. Blood mingled with the blackened silt, but he barely felt it.
Pain of the flesh was nothing compared to the void inside him.
By the seventh day, he was barely functioning–a hollow wolf, driven by nothing but the sheer will to reclaim what had been lost.
Then, his assistant called. The voice on the other end, usually composed, was trembling.
“Sir… you need to come to the infirmary. Now.”
Alaric dropped everything. Covered in filth, his hands raw and bleeding, his once–pristine
attire ruined, he ran.
Bursting into the room, he nearly collapsed from exhaustion, his heart hammering wildly
in his chest.
“Has Mina woken up?”
