Chapter 28
They had been walking for what felt like an eternity, deep into the heart of Shadowfang Mountains, where even the moonlight hesitated to shine. The air was thick with an eerie stillness, the kind that whispered of ancient magic and unspoken secrets.
Finally, Alaric stopped beneath the towering shadow of an ancient tree.
Mona, still weak, barely managed to stay upright.
But then she saw it. Beneath the gnarled roots of the tree, a body lay still. A woman.
No rise and fall of breath. No flicker of movement. At first glance, she appeared long dead.
But Mona recognized her. It was the same woman she had seen in the top floor ward of the hospital.
A piercing pain shot through her skull.
Memories surged forward in a chaotic storm, flashing images she couldn’t fully grasp. Her knees buckled under the weight of them, sending her crashing to the forest floor.
Alaric lunged to catch her, his arms instinctively reaching out-
But the hooded man beside him stopped him with a firm gesture.
“Let her remember on her own,” the man’s voice rasped, his presence heavy with magic
“The memories must surface naturally. Only then can I begin the ritual to restore her soul.”
“Unless,” he added, voice laced with quiet menace, “you do not wish to have your mate
back?”
Alaric’s fists clenched, but he stepped back, his gaze never leaving Mona as she trembled on the ground.

The memories slammed into her like a tidal wave, breaking apart her present and stitching together the missing pieces of her past.
She remembered now.
The deal.
The witch had whispered to her in Shadowfang Mountains.
It had saved her.
exchange, she had promised to live its unfinished fate.
To take its name. To marry Kieran.
She was Mina.
But she was also Mona.
A soul split in two.
The hooded figure’s voice was soft but chilling. “You remember now, don’t you?”
Mona’s breath came in sharp gasps as she forced herself back to her feet.
The pieces finally fit.
She had lived two lives, experienced two loves, but now she belonged to one.
She turned to Alaric, her voice unwavering.
“It doesn’t matter what memories come back,” she said. “I will never love you again.”
“I love Kieran.”
Even if she was two souls, even if part of her once belonged to Alaric–She was no longer that person.

She was Mona. And she had made her choice,
The winds that had been swirling through the forest suddenly halted, the unnatural
stillness thick with tension.
The hooded figure frowned, murmuring to himself as if something had gone wrong
Alaric, still staring at Mona, didn’t notice,
“What’s happening?” he demanded.
The hooded man exhaled sharply, eyes narrowing. “A rare occurrence,” he muttered.
“A soul split in two.”
Alaric froze.
“What?”
“If I force the soul back into one body,” he continued, “there is a high risk of it being torn apart in the process. If that happens-”
His thin lips curled into an almost cruel smile. “Neither Mina nor Mona will survive.”
Alaric stiffened. The reality of it sank in. If he forced her soul back, there was a chance she would die. He would lose her forever.
His hands trembled at his sides. For the first time, he hesitated.
And in that moment–The forest erupted with a furious howl. A sound that shook the ground itself.
Kieran had arrived.
