Chapter 19

The condition of Pixie village was worse than we imagined.
Charred remains of buildings, animals and plants remained strewn around, the air was foggy and contaminated, sending Kelvin into an occasional coughing fit.
For a village, it was really big, and it was taking us a bit of time carefully look through and locate areas not affected by the
My mother’s house was located at the edge of the village and would take us a few hours to get through as we combed through the debris before us
It’s been a few hours since I heard from Mallory since she abruptly cut off the mind link.
As much as I didn’t want to admit I was beginning to miss her voice and
presence.
Communicating with her also put Silver in the best of moods as he happily stayed quiet all day.
“I don’t think there’s anything to see in this area, Alpha.” Kelvin spoke
“Yes, it doesn’t look like much was left behind by the fire. Let’s head over to the other side.
The village office is around there.” I responded.
According to the reports submitted by Kelvin, some documents remained intact at the office and I hoped to get some clue about the village.
Pixie forest had remained an autonomous part of the kingdom for centuries, but the decision by the palace to put it up for reconstruction was more than meets the eye.
We walked forward clutching handkerchiefs which were pressed to our nostrils to prevent the smoke from choking us.
We arrived at the village office to see whips of smoke escaping into the air.
The caution signs wrapped around the building had been torn, and it looked like a fresh fire had started there.
“Check behind for signs of anyone,” I instructed Kelvin and moved to the other side, my claws drawn out
The search yielded no result, and the documents we hoped to find had been charred to a crisp, prompting a large sigh to escape my lips.
“This was a waste of time,” I murmured.
“Everything of value has been burnt to ashes. I don’t think we can gather any information here
“Yeah. We should get back to the pack.” I replied, turning on my heels.
“What about your mom’s place? You were going to check it out.
“I doubt it escaped the hire, but since there’s still time, let’s find out, I answered and we made our way to the edge of the village.
Getting there was no easy task as the pathway was blocked with wooden poles and boulders.
We arrived shortly before the sky turned dark, and to my surprise, the house structure still stood.

Chapter 19

The house was made of stone which had been blackened by the smoke furnes.
I stopped at the open doorway, feeling a rush of emotions clouding my heart.
I left this place when I was two
as two years old and never
ver returned, not even to see my mom before her death.
Guilt gripped my heart as I stared at the familiar carvings around the doorway.
They were height measurements which she took each month to how how tall I was getting.
“Come on,” Kelvin’s voice broke me out of my thoughts and I stepped in gingerly.
My eyes roved around the blackened wall and the tattered curuis that hung around the doorway.
I walked towards the fireplace and crouched, clearing out the stack of wood that blocked it.
1 paused as my hand touched a smooth surface, making me throw out the wood more fervently.
It was cleared to reveal a black and white framed picture.
I picked up the picture, wiping away the thick dust that coated it and saw that it was a baby picture of me and my mom.

My eyes scanned her face deeply, memorizing the shape, eye size and lip shape, ingraining every little detail of the picture to mind so I don’t forget it..
I turned it around to look at the frame and my eyes caught a white paper sticking out from it.
I pulled it out gently, carefully in case it was the main picture I was pulling.
The paper was folded and the Ink which was written on it was smudged, staining the edges of the paper.
It was a short letter which read
Ivan, if you’re reading this letter then mommy is gone. To know the truth, go to Mountain peak pack and find Talia.
Love you always,
Eva.
I read the letter four more times, not comprehending the contents.
Truth? What truth? And who is Talia?
“Ivan? You have to see this!” Kelvin declared from his crutched position by the floorboards.
I dropped the photograph on the fireplace and walked over to him.
His hands lifted an iron box from a hidden floorboard he opened by accident.
The box opened to reveal a thick stack of purple floral–covered paper, which I recognized as my mom’s writing paper.
I crouched down beside him and picked up a paper which was revealed to be a letter,
A love letter:
The letters contained words and words of sweet nothings and interactions between my mom and a man.
I cringed at the wordings, my mind imagining my usual stoic father writing sweet words like this.

The letters contained no forwarding address and the signature was a purple lily.
Was this letter between
my mom
and dad? Or was it someone else?
“Kelvin, check if each one of the letters have a name signature ofher than the lily sign.”
“Sure.”
We sat on the dirty, hard floor, combing through the thick stack of letters, my moral compass for my mom collapsing with sentence I read.

Whew! Not what a child wanted to s
to see of his parents.
“I got one!” Kelvin announced from his position.
An audible sigh escaped my lips as I reached over and grabbed the letter from him, my eyes rushing to the bottom.

My father’s name was Theodore Greywood.
The name on the letter didn’t match his name.”
It was signed. Zeke,
