Chapter 43 Russell Unmasks Zoey as Dr. Z
At that moment, Zoey suddenly opened her eyes and reached out to grab Russell’s arm.
“Zoey, you…”
Her voice was hoarse. “Why are you here?”
Russell’s expression was serious. “I came to check if you kicked off the blanket, but I didn’t expect you to have a fever.”
Zoey adjusted her clothes and leaned against the headboard with a mischievous smile. “Liar! You just wanted to take advantage of me, didn’t you? You miss me, right? You can’t sleep without me, can you
“Yes.” Russell admitted directly. He suddenly stood up from his wheelchair, surprising her as he sat down on the edge of the bed.
Zoey was completely taken aback by his sudden movement, exposing herself. “You, what are you doing?”
Russell grabbed her chin and looked at her with certainty. “You are Dr. Z.”
It wasn’t a question–it was a statement of fact. Russell had figured out her identity.
“Zoey, tonight, you took the bullet for me. Let me see your wound.”

“When we were at the old house, you sat on my lap to avoid Nelson. The scent on you was familiar. Back then, I had this illusion that you were Dr. Z.”
Zoey: “…
“Tonight, when I caught you, the feeling of you being Zoey was very strong,” Russell continued. He held her hand. “And tonight, you’re acting very differently. When you kissed me goodnight, I could smell faint traces of blood and alcohol, which made me even more suspicious of your identity. When I thought about you taking the bullet for me, I felt uneasy and couldn’t help but come check on you.”
Zoey chuckled, trying to deflect. “Blood and alcohol? What if I’m on my period?”
Russell’s gaze dropped, and Zoey quickly raised her hand to cover his face. “Don’t look down!”
Russell laughed and gently took her feverish hand in his. “You’re changing the subject.”
“That’s not allowed either!”
Russell looked at the dry skin on her lips and kissed them
lightly. “I’ll get you some anti–inflammatory and fever medicine, then I’ll take care of your wound.”
“Okay.”
Zoey watched as Russell retrieved a medical kit from the nightstand and took out some anti–inflammatory medicine.

“Wait for me. I’ll get you some water.”
Russell sat back in his wheelchair went downstairs to get some water, and soon returned with a jug of warm water.
After Zoey took the medicine, she sat at the edge of the bed, letting Russell carefully re–bandage her wound.
Russell asked, “Why did you hide your identity?”
Zoey looked at him sideways. “That day, I was planning to tell you the truth, but when you said you would break my leg to drag me to you, I got a little scared.”
Russell hadn’t expected that one sentence of his to cause her to hide the truth.
“Sorry, I scared you.”
“It’s okay. But really, I’m sorry I didn’t take the job earlier.”
Russell was puzzled. “Why didn’t you take the job before? I offered a high price.”
Could she say it was because she thought he needed treatment for his leg, so she didn’t take the job?
Zoey cleared her throat. “I was quite busy back then.”
Russell didn’t think much of it and nodded. “When did you start studying medicine?”
Zoey thought for a moment. “Not long after I went to Corbourne. Corbourne has no gun control, so shootings happen quite often. One night, after evening classes, I passed an alley and found an almost dying Octavio. I just happened to take him

home. Turns out, he was my teacher’s senior brother, and through that, I met my teacher, who is known as Dr. Ghost.”
“Why is he called Dr. Ghost?”
“Because he wears a human–skin mask, and no one has ever seen his real face.”
“Have you seen it?”
Zoey nodded. “Yes, he’s just a creepy old man. By the way, how did you get injured?”
Zoey knew the truth about Russell’s leg injury from her past life, but if she said it directly now, it would seem odd. She wanted him to say it himself.
Russell pressed his lips together, took a deep breath. “What if I told you the person who s you at the bar was me? Would
you believe it?”
Zoey held his hand. “I believe you!”
Hearing her unwavering response, Russell’s heart swelled with emotion.
Zoey asked, “Why didn’t you say anything before?”
“Because there was no need to. Didn’t you like Nelson?” he asked.
“No, it wasn’t like that,” Zoey answered, holding his face in both hands. “Nelson said he was the one who saved me! But he didn‘ t have any qualities that attracted me. I was just grateful, but I mistook it for love. It wasn’t love.”

hers
Russell looked at her, understanding. “Zoey, at the engagement party, you chose me. I know it was to get back at Nelson, even the marriage certificate. But I didn’t mind. I was still happy because you are the girl I’ve always wanted.”
“Russell, I chose you not just to get back at that jerk, but because I want to marry you. But why am I the girl you’ve always wanted?”
Russell asked, “Zoey, do you remember being kidnapped?”
“Kidnapped?” Zoey thought for a moment. “Yes, I remember. I was kidnapped by Jordan’s business rival. There was also a young guy who was kidnapped with me. But how do you know about that?”
She looked at him with a probing gaze. “Were you that young guy?”
Russell nodded. “Yes.”
Zoey couldn’t believe it. “I thought that guy was already…”
“Already dead?”
Zoey nodded in disbelief.
“At that time, I was rescued before you. The kidnapper said he would kill me, but he was just trying to scare you,” Russell said, stroking her hand gently. “I had claustrophobia, and when we were thrown into a container, it was hard for me to breathe. You kept encouraging me, and that’s why I managed to survive. Zoey, you were the light in my life!”
Zoey pondered for a moment. “So it wasn’t a coincidence that

you saved me at the bar?”
Russell nodded. “My classmates and I were passing by the bar when I saw you get out of a taxi and run inside. I felt it was unsafe, so I followed you. That’s when the fire happened.”
Now Zoey understood why Russell had been so persistent with her–his feelings for her had roots in a fate they had shared since they were children.
She felt she owed him so much in her past life.
She sniffled. “Russell, I love you.”
The words shook Russell to his core. His voice was hoarse. “Zoey, say it again.”
“Russell, I love you.”
Russell’s eyes widened wil surprise and joy. He tilted his head and kissed her lips, his scorching lips and tongue igniting a fire in her heart, making his own heartbeat race.
Russell pushed her down and kissed her passionately, as though trying to devour her completely.
Zoey let out a soft moan, bringing him back to his senses.
Though he longed to be with her, he knew it wasn’t the right time. After all, she was still injured.
“Sorry, I hurt your wound.”
“Don’t apologize, you didn’t do it on purpose.”
Russell adjusted the clothes she had pulled up. “Sleep now. I’ll

stay by your side.”
He pulled a thin blanket over her. ‘Sleep well.”
“Then lie next to me.”
“Okay.”
Russell turned off the bedside lamp, lying next to Zoey, holding her hand.
Zoey murmured, “Will you stay with me tonight? Don’t leave, okay?”
“Okay.”
Zoey, exhausted from her injuries and fever, quickly drifted off to sleep.
The weight that had burde was finally lifted.
Russell’s heart for so many years
Zoey’s feelings for Nelson weren’t love; she had mistakenly believed that the person who saved her was him. Thinking about how Zoey had thrown herself in front of a bullet for him tonight, Russell was deeply moved.
He pulled her into his arms and whispered, “Zoey, I love you.”
