Chapter 11
During my morning rounds, I found myself examining Sage, still sporting injuries from her “trespassing incident.”
She’d just calmed down when she spotted my bracelet – the one from Harrison’s post.
“It was you! You’re getting close to him to get revenge on me?”
I steadied her. “Please stay still during the ultrasound. This equipment costs more than your lawyer’s retainer.”
My hand accidentally pressed one of her bruises, causing her to yelp dramatically.
Once the pain subsided, she regained her calculated composure. Sensing my gentle nature, she smirked.
“Matteo’s answer that night must have crushed you. But you need to understand – we’re different, you and I. I’m the one he chased for five years, his unattainable dream. You? You were… convenient. The difference between us in his heart is like Park Avenue and outer Queens.”
She knew exactly where to strike.
“First loves are unforgettable. Even if you’d married him, I’d have stayed embedded in his heart forever.”
Seeing me continue the examination unfazed, she lowered her voice.
“Want to know something? After you left that night, he drove me home… and stayed. While you were lying awake heartbroken, he was sleeping soundly beside me. That’s the man you loved for three years.”
She leaned in closer. “Though I may have caused you pain, shouldn’t you thank me for showing you his true colors?”
I frowned, my expression growing serious.
Sage smiled triumphantly. “Not so composed now, are we?”
I shook my head, wrote out a form, and handed it to her.
“The ultrasound shows a mass in your right breast. We can’t rule out malignancy. I’m

recommending an immediate biopsy for confirmation.”
Her smile froze.
“You’re… you’re joking? This is some sick revenge?”
“I don’t play games with diagnoses.” I stood, methodically cleaning the equipment and disposing of the ultrasound gel.
With perfect composure, I handed her the gift basket on my desk.
“Mrs. Watson sent this as an apology for the… incident. Don’t forget to take it.”
I paused at the door. “Though she may have caused you pain, shouldn’t you thank her? Without this examination, we might not have caught this early.”
Sage stared blankly as the basket slipped from her hands, scattering imported fruit across the pristine hospital floor.
