Chapter 12
Chapter 12
It was a rare sunny day when Matteo decided to make his grand gesture at Mount Sinai.
During lunch break, enjoying a moment of quiet, Harrison claimed he was experiencing chest pains
and insisted I examine him. Without waiting for my response, he closed the door, removed his white
coat, and settled onto the exam table.
One by one, he undid his shirt buttons. While his tailored shirts always made him look lean, they’d
been hiding quite the gym routine.
Seeing me hesitate, he prompted, “Well, Dr. Pierce, shall we begin?”
“Dr. Astor, a cardiac exam doesn’t require unbuttoning to your navel.”
“Oh.” He slowly refastened the lower buttons, concealing his perfectly defined abs.
I prepped the ultrasound, applying gel. When I touched his chest, he shivered slightly, his breathing
suddenly uneven.
“Relax, Dr. Astor,” I smiled, moving the transducer across his chest. The room fell silent except for
our breathing.
Harrison’s cheeks flushed, his lashes fluttering. Amateur.
Just then, Dr. Parker burst in. “Dr. Pierce-” He froze, seeing his typically ice–cold colleague
half–dressed on my exam table.
Parker squeezed his eyes shut in pain.
Harrison calmly buttoned up, his face instantly returning to its usual aristocratic mask.
Suppressing a laugh, I asked, “Yes, Dr. Parker?”
Eyes still closed, Parker muttered, “There’s a guy downstairs with a Bentley full of roses. Seems to be here for you.”
Looking out the window, I saw Matteo surrounded by a flower shop’s worth of bouquets.
He’d been desperately trying to reach me, even making appointments as a patient. After his tearful confession, I’d simply suggested he visit Psychiatry.

Chapter 12
Now he stood below, launching into an emotional speech.
“I was drunk that night… I’ve regretted it every moment since. It was just an old obsession clouding my judgment. I realized… you’re the one I truly love. Aurora, can you forgive me? Let me court you again, like before?”
He gazed up hopefully. I wondered if this was how he’d looked years ago, pursuing Sage with flowers. Surely more innocent than this desperate display.
You can’t have it both ways.
I turned to Parker. “This isn’t romance, it’s a security issue. Better call security before he unfurls that banner and this ends up on social media.”
Parker sprinted off to alert security. Before Matteo could unveil his banner, security converged with impressive efficiency.
Matteo looked up pleadingly, then spotted Harrison beside me. His face contorted.
“You calculating bastard… playing the long game to steal her…”
His shouts grew more unhinged until security escorted him away.
I closed the window with relief, turning to find Harrison had unbuttoned again.
“We weren’t quite finished,” he said with feigned innocence, taking my hand and placing it over his heart. “Doctor, don’t you need to check if my heart’s really racing?”
