Chapter 7
At Sloane’s insistence, I took refuge at the Astor mansion. She was convinced Matteo would try something dramatic at my place.
To everyone’s shock, Harrison not only agreed but offered up his own suite. “The morning light in here is perfect,” he said, moving himself to the guest wing near his father’s quarters.
“I don’t get it,” Sloane puzzled aloud. “This is my brother who once threatened to burn his room down when I borrowed his Oxford sweatshirt. He’s so particular about his space, I’ve always joked
he has a restraining order against the entire female population.”
“Yet here he is, rolling out the welcome mat for you,” she narrowed her eyes thoughtfully. “Know
what that means?”
“What?” I asked, as Harrison’s footsteps creaked overhead.
“It means Matteo and Sage must have really crossed a line. Even my emotionally stunted brother is showing compassion!” Sloane declared.
“If you’re done with your amateur psychoanalysis,” Harrison’s voice cut in icily as he descended the
stairs with deliberate heaviness.
His room was exactly what you’d expect from a top surgeon – meticulously organized with a subtle hint of expensive cologne. When I opened the French doors to the balcony, a breeze scattered some papers from his desk.
Gathering them up, I froze. They were all patient charts from three years ago – my detailed notes from Sloane’s stay at Mount Sinai. But it was the last page that caught my breath: a single note in Harrison’s precise penmanship.

Just four words, yet they felt weighted with unspoken meaning. Had I accidentally uncovered something I wasn’t supposed to know?
I quickly returned everything to its exact place and retreated to the king–sized bed, my heart racing. Don’t overthink this, I told myself firmly. Don’t read into it.
But surrounded by Harrison’s carefully curated space, his presence seemed overwhelming. Every time I closed my eyes, his face appeared unbidden in my thoughts.
