“Melanie,” Haelor’s voice was etched with concern as he watched me. I didn’t miss how his hands seemed to tighten by his side.
“That piece of shit,” Haelor cursed. “I shouldn’t have banished him into the Dark Forest in the first place. Torturing him would have been much better. Leave him imprisoned and give him more pain than he’s ever felt in his life.”
He must still think the pain I was feeling had something to do with the poison. I still hadn’t told him about Olavir’s cure just yet. So far so good, only Askhan was aware of this.
“Don’t talk about him please.” My grip on his hand tightened.
He got the message immediately and stopped talking about Jack. I was grateful for that much, my focus going back to the pain that was hitting me square in the chest.
“Melanie.”
This time, it had come from Quentin. He had left the center of the stage and made his way to me. There was a look of concern written all over his face as he watched me.
“Are you okay?” His head snapped to Haelor. “What’s wrong with her?”
I didn’t notice it at first but slowly, I could feel the pain starting to dissipate. Maybe it was the scent of both men. I could feel myself feeling lighter, less like I’d been stabbed.
“I think I’m okay now.” I put a hand on my chest, feeling the pain completely gone.
Quentin looked annoyed, a look of mild irritation passing behind his eyes. “Was this some kind of prank?”
“It wasn’t–Well, so what if it’s a prank?” I flashed my trademark smile.
I barely got a reply in before he plopped himself on the seat beside me. It was funny how childlike he was acting all because he thought this must have been some ploy I might have concocted.

Different things like precious stones, paintings and even the infamous pearl necklace worn by the previous Queen Luna to a ball. Things were all the way in when a man began making his way to the
stage.
He was dressed in a black suit with a maroon dress shirt underneath. He’d abandoned more than
half the buttons, leaving his bare chest on full display.
The host was all smiles as he sized the man up. After a brief second, he turned back to face the
audience.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” he gestured to the next item. “The following auction item was donated by none other than the Alpha of Maple Leaf Pack.”
The man that had been standing on stage did a small bow and waved at the audience. The host went
- on.
“This was done by Alpha Zack as a show of love to his long time sweetheart and mate, Miss Bella.”
Bella immediately shot out of her seat, all smiles as she slowly made her way down to the stage.
“Thank you so much, baby. I love you.” She wrapped her arms around his neck and placed a soft kiss on his cheek.
“Anything for my princess,” He sent her a small wink.
The crowd cooed at their show of affection. I alone remained unfazed as I continued to watch her. As I expected, her gaze flicked to Haelor for a brief second.
Then it happened again. And then a third time.
She’d been all high and mighty back then, calling me names and accusing me. Yet, she couldn’t even keep her eyes off Haelor, even while her supposed mate was there.
Her eyes turned to me and a brief look of annoyance flashed behind them. Why not step up the game and piss her off even more.
Without breaking eye–contact, I hooked a finger under Haelor’s chin and leaned towards his cheek.
To his credit, Haelor didn’t move a muscle. He simply watched me with curious eyes while a dust of rose hung on his cheeks.
Isaw when the last of Bella’s self–control snapped. She let go of Zack and let out a growl. The whole

room gasped in shock as they watched her.
She wasn’t the slightest bit fazed by this and fixed her focus on me.
“Baby?”
Zack fixed her a curious stare, wondering why she had growled like that. It must have been a bit embarrassing, having his mate act like that, and at an auction no less.
She cleared her throat and muttered a small apology. “I was just so moved by what you did for me, baby. Sorry I couldn’t control it.”
His eyes softened just a little. “It’s alright my love.”
The host let out a breath before fixing a practiced smile on his face. He gestured for the assistants to display the auction item in question.
“This particular item is an oil painting created about three hundred years ago. It was made by the Luna of a certain pack as a gift of love to her Alpha when he had gone on a vampire crusade. Ladies and gentlemen, you don’t get to see a bigger act of love these days than this.”
