Chapter 3
In the depths of sight, sleep eluded me.
My mind wandered to the safe concealed in Alexander’s study–one I’d never dared to open until now.
The combination dicked instantly: Claire’s birthday. Of course
Instead of the love letters or keepsakes Id imagined, I found something far more damning a corporate
Steal
The company name hit me like a freight train. Though we had no official connection, I knew this entity intimately. They were the shadow investors behind every project Claire had touched–every film, every show, every endorsement deal
It finally made sense. Despite the critics‘ constant panning of her performances, Claire’s career had scared past mine, even with my status in high society.
The puppet master had been Alexander all along
My mind flashed to that prestigious film role last year. An A–list director had personally sought me out. The script was brilliant, the creative team impeccable. I’d thrown myself into preparation–six months of rigorous training, strict diets, countless sleepless nights.
I’d gushed to Alexander about it repeatedly, only to hear him say, “Darling, why push yourself so hard? Isn’t being my wife enough?”
Days before filming, the director broke contract, paying an astronomical penalty to recast Claire in my
role.
Now I knew why. This same mysterious company had tripled the investment, essentially buying my part
for her.
I replaced the seal and shut the safe, letting darkness envelop me once more.
My phone pierced the blackness with its harsh glow.
“Are you certain about this, Miss White?”
“Yes.”
It was time to exit their little passion play.
