I chuckled lightly.
“What good did his love do? He still cheated. He hid it, his friends hid it, and perhaps you were hiding it too.” Ever since Liam and I had married, she had pressured us relentlessly to have children. Liam couldn’t, and he refused to pressure me, which only fueled her animosity toward me. When she discovered Chloe’s pregnancy, she abandoned all pretense of propriety. Infidelity, once a disgrace in the Sterling family, was conveniently overlooked in her desperation for a grandchild.
My gaze sharpened. She’d condoned his affair, yet she pleaded with me, someone utterly disillusioned. “Mrs. Sterling, tell him this. He’s not only hurting himself, but me. The damage he’s done isn’t enough; he wants to break me completely.” I dismissed her. She left, defeated.
At the hospital, seeing Mrs. Sterling alone, the last light in Liam’s eyes died. He didn’t speak, simply waving her away. He picked up their wedding photo; tears of regret fell onto my smiling face.
He knew that if he’d resisted, Chloe wouldn’t have slept with him. He convinced himself he’d done it to spare me childbirth. But his heart had fallen for Chloe.
The man who’d vowed eternal fidelity at our wedding, who’d claimed divine punishment for infidelity, who’d sworn his love was only for me… had cheated.
He set down the photo, his lifeless eyes settling on a fruit knife. I’d asked him what he’d do if his heart was the problem. He could finally
answer.
He would kill himself.
“Aah!”
“Someone’s dead!”
A night nurse screamed at the bloody scene. Mrs. Sterling, approaching, dropped her food container. I pushed past the horrified nurse, collapsing to the floor.
Liam lay in bed, a fruit knife plunged into his chest.
Upon hearing of his death, I stood there, numb. A tear escaped. Wiping it away, I grabbed my suitcase and left. Boarding the plane, I looked back at the city. I would never return.
Years passed. I lay on a hospital bed, awaiting death. Then, I opened my eyes, staring at a
