John Wilson retorted defiantly, “Sister–in–law didn’t say anything, so neither will I!” He’d been outsmarted by his brother again. Unbelievable! It had been this way his whole life!
Jack’s voice sharpened, “My patience is wearing thin.”
found me in a dumpster.”
“Bro, are you sure I’m your real brother? I bet you found
“Glad you know,” Jack replied.
John Wilson exploded.“I don’t care! I’m your real brother! You want answers? Make “her” talk, huh?” He slammed the phone down in a huff – they were always picking on him!
Jack tried calling several times, but the brat wouldn’t answer. He rubbed his temples in frustration. He texted, “Wings getting too big, huh?” The little punk! Had John Wilson blabbed something that made Alice suspicious of his identity? Jack felt a pang of anxiety. But John Wilson’s words didn’t sound quite right.
Changing clothes, Jack went outside and saw Alice sitting alone on the floor, looking forlorn and isolated. He felt a pang of sympathy.
He walked over and tossed a pair of boxing gloves at her, hitting her squarely in the chest.
“Ouch!” Alice yelped, turning to see Jack smirking. The urge to punch him overwhelmed her.
“Did you do that on purpose?” she demanded.
“Obviously not. Did you see “me” throw it? It rolled over itself.”

“You think I’d believe that?” Alice had been dwelling on John Wilson’s words, feeling down, bu now she was just furious.
Jack picked up the gloves.“Then prove me wrong. Let’s spar.”
Alice gritted her teeth. Seeing the bandage still on his shoulder, she realized he hadn’t taken it off.
Jack followed her gaze.“Don’t worry, I’m guarding them.”
Did this guy “ever” speak normally?
Alice launched a surprise punch, connecting perfectly. She grinned, stepping back.“You weren’t paying attention.”
Jack touched his chin, his eyes locked on hers.“Too weak. Needs work.“.
Alice refused to be outdone, charging at him. They traded blows in the ring.
His voice was lazily drawling, “Too slow. Is your reaction time that bad? Are you a turtle?”
“You have openings! Use your head, not just brute force!”
“Too soft! Put some power behind it! Didn’t you eat?”
Alice was about to explode. He criticized her speed, then her openings, then her power. How could he be so infuriatingly critical?
Finally, exhausted, she collapsed onto the floor.“I can’t do this anymore.”
Jack looked down at her.“Good. You’re tired.” Too tired to overthink things.
e handed her a clean towel. Too tired to even lift her arms, she didn’t move. Jack sat beside her, wiping the sweat from her face.

Alice felt his touch, her heart skipping a beat.
She took the towel.“I can do it myself.”

Jack didn’t say anything, placing two water bottles nearby. He was also tired. Alice had made significant progress, her punches stronger than most women. The coach was right; she had real talent.
Wiping the sweat, Alice felt relaxed, too drained to worry about anything. They sat in comfortable silence as the setting sun cast beautiful light into the gym.
Jack finally broke the silence.“What did John Wilson say to you?”
“How did you
know?”
Alice stared at him, apprehensive. Had Jack noticed something? The man was sharp; it wouldn’t be easy to hide anything from him.
Jack was equally anxious, unsure what John Wilson had told Alice.
He remained calm.“Don’t take his words to heart.”
“I know,” Alice replied, calmer now.“I just asked him a question, but he never answered.”
“What did you ask?” Jack’s breath hitched. He’d never been this nervous during business negotiations.
Alice hesitated, then, thinking Jack knew John Wilson and seemed friendly with him, maybe he knew the answer? John Wilson would only quit the finals for someone incredibly important.
Jack looked at her intently.“You don’t trust me?”
“No, but it’s not a big deal. I just asked if he’d ever quit a competition because of someone.” Alice realized her question was inappropriate. How was John Wilson supposed to answer that?
Jack found the question odd.“Why did you ask that?”
“Just… curious,” Alice mumbled, unable to tell the truth.
Jack remembered John Wilson’s earlier words and understood the kid’s agitated questioning. He smirked.“You wouldn’t happen to be trying to find John Wilson’s weakness so he’ll quit next year’s competition, would you?”
“What are you talking about? Am I that kind of person?” Alice was shocked. She’d never stoop to such tactics. Competitions were about skill, about winning fairly! Winning unfairly was meaningless. But seeing Jack’s expression, she realized John Wilson must have misunderstood,
too.
“Then why did you ask? And why are you so upset about it?” Jack thought about Alice and John Wilson standing together at the competition, a strange unease settling in his chest.
Alice wanted to explain, but she couldn’t reveal the real reason. She hesitated.“Okay, I admit I was testing him a bit.”
Jack studied her, sensing she wasn’t being entirely truthful.
“You seem awfully curious about John Wilson,” he stated.
Alice nodded.“I am.” She needed to determine if John Wilson was the man from her that required interaction.

“He’s two years older than me! We’re adults! And ‘kid‘ makes you sound old!” Jack chuckled and pinched her cheek.“Who’s old?”
Alice rubbed her face.“Whoever it applies to.”
Looking at him, she realized he wasn’t old, he was young, handsome, and incredibly fit. The interaction felt charged.
She stood abruptly.“I need to change.” She fled, slapping her face. Don’t overthink it. After showering and changing, she found him leaning against the wall, his posture effortlessly elegant.
They left the gym together, walking side–by–side toward Cloud University, their shadows nearly merging.
“Alice,” a voice called.
Nathan’s car was parked on the side of the road. He rushed over, his expression grim.
older your Alice frowned, wanting nothing to do with him. But he pressed on.“Alice, I heard brother is using his connections in the legal field to make things difficult for you.”
Alice raised an eyebrow.“So?”
*Alice, the Alice family suffered huge losses from losing that bid. Your brother is furious. If you’re seeking revenge, you’ve achieved your goal. Why press charges and go to court?”
