The green light flashed. The sound of a car

horn blared from behind them.
Alice glanced at him. When she was about to ask something, her phone rang. She quickly answered the call, putting it on speaker.“Ms. McMorrow, is there something wrong?” “We just found that the money Chloe transferred has disappeared.”
“Disappeared? What do you mean?”
Alice’s heart sank.“Did Darren take the money?”
“We’re
not sure yet. We’ve already sent people to trace its whereabouts.” Elena hadn’t expected things to escalate like this. To her surprise, someone was still trying to track down the missing money.
Jack’s voice was cold and sharp.“What the hell are you all doing? How could you miss something so obvious?”
“Sorry, Mr. Wilson, it was our oversight. We thought everyone had fled, assuming he’d be trying to avoid detection. We didn’t expect him to be bold enough to move the money.” Elena’s voice trembled with anxiety, clearly feeling the weight of their mistake. Jack’s voice was icy.“Find them. Use whatever means necessary to track down this person.”
“Understood.”
Elena ended the call abruptly.
Alice stared at her phone for a moment, then said, “Take me to my apartment. I’ll go after him myself.”
If the money had been taken, there had to be evidence somewhere.
Jack stepped on the gas, speeding back to Alice’s apartment.
Alice kicked off her shoes and ran barefoot to her study, opening her laptop immediately.
She dialed Elena’s number.“Sync the data to me.”
“Right away.”
Alice’s fingers flew over the keyboard, eyes focused intently on the screen.
Jack changed into comfortable shoes and walked in. He carried a pair of slippers in his hands, bending down to help Alice put them on.
Alice was so absorbed in her work that she didn’t notice what was happening around her at all.
Jack stood by, watching her, then turned to make a phone call, his thoughts running. Something about this whole situation felt off.
He couldn’t shake the feeling that something had been overlooked.
Was Darren capable of pulling this off? Disappearing so suddenly, yet managing to steal the money?
Alice sat in front of her laptop for hours, barely taking a break. In the end, she tracked down the

Mysterious Web.
The money had been split and withdrawn.

It was rare to recover money once it had been moved through a laundering system. Tracing the account was nearly impossible, and finding the mastermind behind it would be even harder.
“Take a break.”
Jack said, placing a cup of water next to her hand.“Clearly, they had everything planned out in advance.”
“I just don’t secrets?”

“That’s what I find strange too.”
Jack looked at Alice. “But we’ve got someone in our hands now, which means we have leverage.” “Exactly. The mechanic has a close relationship with Aviana. Not long ago, Aviana went to see him. I wonder what they talked about.”
Alice pursed her lips. “But it won’t be long before Aviana finds out that something happened to the mechanic.”
At that point, their enemies would know she was onto them.
It would no longer be easy to gather evidence.
“So, we need to strike first, find a way to probe her.”
Alice nodded, then noticed that she was wearing shoes.
Her heart warmed as she realized Jack had put them on her.
She looked up into his calm eyes, her own brimming with tears. How could she control her feelings for him?
“What’s wrong?” Jack asked.
He noticed the tears in her eyes. He couldn’t help but reach for a tissue. Before he could offer it, she threw herself into his arms, gripping his shirt tightly.
Alice clung to the man before her, shutting her eyes to escape from her thoughts. Jack’s hand hovered in the air for a moment before gently landing on her shoulder. He patted her back softly. “Are you hungry?”
He guessed Alice probably hadn’t eaten much at the wedding.
Alice shook her head. “I’m not hungry.”
She had eaten enough before the event.
Jack gently patted her back.“Alice, don’t overthink it.”
“I know. You don’t need to give me any advice. I just want some peace.”

She understood the reasoning, but she needed time to get back on
Jack swallowed the words that had been on the tip of his tongue, choosing not to remain silent.
He held her close, staring out the window. The lights of the city were twinkling in the distance. But right now, he already had one of those lights. It was her.

Jack held her for a long while, then looked down to see her weary expression. “Go have some rest.” He gently lifted her and carried her to the bedroom.
Alice sat on the edge of the bed.“I need to wash up first.”
“Go ahead,” Jack replied.
After Alice finished washing up and changed into her pajamas, she emerged to find Jack standing by the window, his tall figure silhouetted against the night.
She walked over to him.“Thank you for staying with me.”
“No need to thank me. I’ll always stay with you.”
His voice was calm, but it stirred
whirlwind of emotions in Alice’s heart.
He ruffled her hair gently.“Just go to sleep. Don’t think about anything else.”
Jack took her hand, helped her get comfortable in bed, and covered her with the blanket.
Alice gazed up at him, her hand reaching out to hold his fingers.“Will you stay with me tonight?”
She didn’t want to be alone.
Jack’s heart softened, and he nodded.“Okay.”
He sat beside her, holding her hand in his.
Alice hesitated, then buried half of her face in the blanket.“You can lie down next to me if want. Makes you more comfortable.”
“I’ll wait until you fall asleep before I lie down.”

Jack reached out and covered her eyes with his hand.“It’s time to sleep now.”
The world went dark for Alice, but strangely, she didn’t feel afraid.
She held his hand tighter.“You can stay until I fall asleep.”
“I’m not leaving.”
Jack’s eyes were deep as he gazed at her. It was as if he was promising, “I will always stay by your
side.”
Forever.
Alice thought she would dream that night, but in the end, she dreamed nothing, not even the car accident from years ago.
She desperately wanted to know what had happened that night.
But no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t remember. The only thing she recalled was the pair of hands that had saved her. They had been young, definitely not those of a middle–aged
man.
So, there had been someone else at the scene.
When Alice woke up, she turned her head to see the man lying beside her. He was frowning as if lost in thought.
Unable to resist, she reached out to trace his features. This man’s face was so pleasing to her. She never grew tired of looking at it.
The next moment, Jack opened his eyes, grabbed her hand, and leaned in closef

Alice immediately woke up.

She blinked, staring at the familiar ceiling, then turned her head to find Jack’s side of the bed empty.
Was everything just a dream?
Alice glanced at her phone. Jack had sent her a message. “The food’s on the table. Don’t worry too much.”
After Alice finished washing up and getting dressed, she sat down at the dining table. It was filled with all her favorite dishes.
Just then, her phone rang. It was an unknown number.
After a moment’s hesitation, Alice answered. Noah’s voice came through.“Alice, how did the investigation go last night? Can we meet and talk?”
She couldn’t help but smile sarcastically.“What makes you think you can talk to me?” “Exchange Chloe’s life for talk. How about that? Will that be enough?”
