Chapter 14
Louis shook his head. “I’m not scared when Mommy’s here.” His words showed just how close he felt to Juliette.
Then he took Juliette’s hand and asked, “If you promise to be my mommy, does that mean you also agree to be Daddy’s
wife!”
Juliette was at a loss for words.
She paused, feeling a gaze on her. She turned to see Patrick stepping out of the car. The memory of her dream from last night flooded back, making her cheeks heat up.
“Daddy, she just promised to be my mommy!” Louis bounced over to Patrick, who effortlessly scooped him up.
A look of surprise crossed Patrick’s face.
Louis continued. “You’d better propose to Mommy so she’ll be your wife. I have a mom. You can’t be without a wife.”
Patrick didn’t reply and walked toward Juliette with Louis still in his arms.
“I sent Harper to the hospital to look after Grandma. She’s not feeling well,” he explained to Juliette as if needing to clarify.
Then he asked, “Have you and Louis eaten? Breakfast is waiting on the table.”
Louis was anxious. He just reminded Patrick about proposing, and Patrick wasn’t saying anything. He tried to nudge his dad a little, but all he got was a look in response, which made Louis pout playfully.
Juliette said, “Not yet. I just came down and saw Louis outside, so I wanted to check on him.”
“It’s Nolan and his mom. They tried to mess with me, but Mom stood up for me. Dad, Mom is a total hero!” Louis exclaimed.
Patrick’s brow furrowed slightly as he glanced at Juliette. “Are you both okay?”
Louis eagerly replied, “We are. But Nolan and his mom? Not so much. She said she had connections with the people in my kindergarten and that I couldn’t go to school anymore. Daddy, she’s so mean and ridiculous!”
Patrick’s expression hardened for a moment, though he didn’t show it. “Let’s go eat first.”
Breakfast was ready–one portion was kept warm on an insulated plate, and another was just sitting at room temperature.
Louis didn’t get it at first and was about to give Juliette the warm plate when Patrick stopped him. “Juliette prefers her food at room temperature. You can have the hot one.”
Louis frowned, arms crossed. “But she’s Mommy now, not just Juliette!
Patrick pursed his lips, glancing over at Juliette as if to ask for her input.
Juliette smiled. “I saved Louis last night–it’s like I gave him a second chance. It shouldn’t be too much to ask for him to call me Mom, right?”
Patrick looked taken aback for a second. Then a grin peeked at the corner of his mouth. “He really likes you. If you’re okay with that, as a dad, I couldn’t be happier for him.”
Patrick was definitely easy on the eyes–his voice had this magnetic charm, and he carried an undeniable male charisma

that felt palpable, especially when he looked at her. In those moments, Juliette felt like she was the center of his universe.
“Louis is just the cutest, and I’m so lucky to be his mom,” she said with a smile.
“Well, I’m ten million times happier than Mommy! Mommy, Daddy, are we making cookies later? My teacher said last Friday that we should make cookies this weekend and bring them to kindergarten on Monday for everyone to taste and judge. With Mommy’s help, I know I’ll win first place!” Louis chipped excitedly.
Juliette suddenly remembered hearing Aurora in the yard talking about making cookies. She realized she had come to him when Louis needed her the most.
“If Ms. Vaughn is busy, I’ll just make them with Louis. Once we’re done, I’ll bring him over to deliver them to you,” Patrick offered.
“No rush at all! I can whip up the cookies with Louis before I heal out,” Juliette replied.
Louis was thrilled and quickly urged Patrick to grab the flour, molds, and all the supplies he had purchased.
After breakfast, Juliette and Louis headed to the kitchen, Patrick, in his black shirt with sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealed long, lean arms. There was a quiet strength about him that radiated masculinity.
The kitchen, which should’ve felt spacious, suddenly felt tight and stifling.
“Do you know how to make cookies, Mommy? This is Daddy and my first time learning, and he found a really good video to help, Louis said.
Patrick raised an eyebrow, silently questioning the plan.
“Don’t worry, Mommy. My dad picks things up quickly, so it wont be too much work for you,” Louis reassured her.
Juliette glanced at Patrick, finding it hard to picture such a reserved guy involved in cookie–making. Balancing the roles of mother and father was no easy feat.
“Don’t worry. I know how to make cookies,” she said, rolling up her sleeves and washing her hands.
“What kind of cookies are we making?” she asked as Patrick pulled out the molds and explained the plan. It turned out to be the simplest type of cookie, without any fancy designs.
‘Classic straight–guy vibes, she thought. ‘How could Louis possibly win first place with cookies like that?”
Louis might be young, but he had his ego. He didn’t want to be the one bringing the least attractive cookies to kindergarten.
“Let’s whip up some butter cookies, sunflower cookies, and cartoon cookies, okay? You know, the kinds that kids can’t resist,” Juliette suggested.
Patrick paused for a moment before replying, “Sure, whatever you say.” It was clear he was still getting the hang of this whole cookie–making thing-
“Tll help out, and you can just tell me what to do,” Patrick added
“Sounds good! I can help, too,” Louis chimed in.
Watching them together, Juliette felt a tiny crack in her already tough heart. She closed her eyes for a moment, then opened them, ready to get everyone working together in the kitchen.

Chapter 14
After about an hour, the timer went off, and she was about to open the oven when Patrick stopped her. “I’ll handle it.”
Juliette paused and then realized there would be heat when the oven was opened. She had just noticed the little warm light in the oven, and it made her uncomfortable already.
She didn’t realize Patrick was paying attention. He gently pushed her back to shield her from the heat before he opened the oven and pulled out the cookies.
“Look at these! They turned out beautiful,” he said, turning to Juliette with a smile. “Let’s taste one to see if it’s good.”
Patrick picked up a sunflower cookie, blew on it a couple of times to cool it down, and offered it to Juliette. “It’s cool now, and you worked the hardest, so you should try it first.”
His voice was low and smooth, and Juliette found herself opening her mouth to take a bite. As her lips brushed against Patrick’s fingers, a jolt of electricity shot through her.
Patrick was momentarily taken aback, staring at her in surprise. Seeing her pale cheeks slowly blush a soft pink made her even more captivating than the cookies.
Instead of looking away, Juliette held his gaze as if daring him to respond. She chewed the cookie in her mouth, savoring it, and then said, “It’s really good.”
In that instant, Patrick felt as if the spot where her lips had touched his fingers was on fire.
